Last evening, we read the second half of 2 Samuel chapter 7 as a family.
The chapter begins with David being troubled that he is living in a house of cedar while the LORD dwells in a tent. He brings his concern to Nathan, the prophet of God, who tells him to do what he has in mind, for God is with him. But that night, God speaks.
And Nathan carries these words to the king and reveals to him who the one is who will build the house for His Name. It shall not be David. Instead, it will be his son.
This son is Solomon, who will build the temple in Jerusalem. It is also the Son, Jesus, the Messiah, whose Kingdom will never cease.
David is not angry. He is not even disappointed.
He is overwhelmed.
“Then King David went in and sat before the LORD, and he said: ‘Who am I, O Sovereign LORD, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far?
And as if this were not enough in your sight, O Sovereign LORD, you have also spoken about the future of the house of your servant. Is this your usual way of dealing with man, O Sovereign LORD?’”
-2 Samuel 7:18-19 (NIV)
Yet, how often do I come to the Creator of the universe with an air of entitlement, as though I could possibly deserve to have Him answer my prayers?
Who am I, indeed?
My prayer is that this would become the heart of my every word and thought.
Who are we, O Sovereign LORD,
To bring us to this place?
Who are we that we should find,
Such favor and such grace?
How great you are, O Sovereign LORD,
No god is there like You!
Not one of these great gifts of yours,
Is because of what we do!
You brought us out of Egypt,
To widely spread your fame,
Why us of all the men on earth,
To bear our Savior's name?
To stand here in Your presence,
And bow here at Your feet,
O LORD of all the universe,
How can I even speak?
But your grace it gives me courage,
For, Lord, You know my name,
And so I come before You,
With boldness, not with shame.
And if all of this were not enough,
You spoke of days to come
You gave to us a promise,
Your grace has just begun!
“‘O Sovereign LORD, you are God!’”
-2 Samuel 7:28a (NIV)
